Introduction
Simply put, Google Panda is an update implemented by Google that dictates what results appear on Google under what criteria. As people continue to discover new ways to rank higher on the Google search result pages without offering content of any value whatsoever, it becomes essential for Google to stay a few paces ahead. Therefore, whenever webmasters and SEOs start catching up, Google updates its algorithm to keep in line with its primary objective: to provide the highest quality search results to its users. Google Panda is the latest addition to the Google’s bandwagon of updates, about which you will learn more as this book unfolds. If you own a business and receive a large percentage of your customers through your website, then you need your website to be well known. It is a known fact that most of us discover new websites through search engines. Remembering domains or bookmarking many websites is a pain, so it is easier to simply Google what we are looking for. This makes it essential for small business owners to get their website on the first few pages of Google’s search results. In other words, you need to keep Google happy if you want your online ventures to succeed. Google has an impressive algorithm that determines which websites offer high-quality content to its users and which offer junk. The algorithm—updated many times since its inception—does a good job of giving accurate results relevant to the search string. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a technique employed by websites that improves a site’s search-engine ranking. Since search-engine robots follow a fixed algorithm for indexing the content of a webpage, it can be determined by following the trends which techniques work and which do not. Over the years, tricks to optimize a site’s ranking have been compiled by people who have extensively studied these search-engine algorithms.

We all know the big three TLDs: .com, .net, and .org. Sometimes these are hard to get your hands on when purchasing a domain name and it sucks to have to settle for anything else. But here’s another option. Wouldn’t it be cool to have a unique name like del.icio.us or Ping.fm? Well check this tool out: Domai.nr . Domai.nr guides you in finding a unique domain based on your keyword phrase.

For example, I punched in “bungie”:

It lists a variety of different options. On top of that, Domai.nr tells you whether or not the domain is taken or available. It will show a small green box next to the domains that are available. Pretty sweet stuff if you ask me!

I personally use an offline software to check my backlinks, but when I need a quick check I either head over to Backlink Watch or Link Diagnosis. I prefer Link Diagnosis and I specifically want to dedicate this post to this tool. Link Diagnosis is a bit different than most online backlink checkers. Not only does it provide a lot more features and functions, but it has one component that other link checkers ignore and is absolutely cructial for getting on top of Google and making you SEO efforts worthwhile.  Before we get started, you must be using Firefox to use Link Diagnosis. It is specifically designed for Firefox and doesn’t work in Chrome or IE unfortunately. Now, with Link Diagnosis you can perform extremely powerful reports for a complete website or just a specific page. You have the options to include page rank and set the speed, report type, and output, as you can see.

Make sure you only use the page rank option when you absolutely need to. If you use it too often, Link Diagnosis will return a lot of “N/A”.  I personally used the “Full” option for “Report Type”. The difference between “Full” and “Optimized” is that the second one will only show one backlink per each domain. I like to see all links from all of the domains.  In general, Link Diagnosis has a lot more features than most backlink checkers. I’m not going to go over every little detail because I want to get to the most important part of this tool. However, one thing to note is that you can save your reports for later use.. which can save a lot of time.

Alright, so after you start the search, Link Diagnosis will return the results with the following columns: Page URL, Page Rank, Anchor, Link Type, Outbound Links, Link Strength, and Link History.

The most important part of this whole tool is Link Strength. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t matter how many backlinks you have to your website. It’s all about the quality of the backlinks. In fact, one extremely powerful backlink can easily help a site outrank another site that has 30,000 junk backlinks. Obviously there are thousands of ranking factors, but from my experience, the major difference between a site ranked #1 and a site ranked #2 is the difference in link strength. Another important thing to note is that there is huge difference between Page PR and Website PR. Not all pages on PR3 domains will have a page rank of 3. For example, a lot of people like to post their links on “high PR” profile websites. That’s all well and good, but your profile page won’t necessarily have a pagerank and therefore will not supply you with the link juice you believe you are getting. If you have a channel profile on youtube and link to your website, you aren’t credited with a PR9 backlink. Sure, having a link  on a PR9 website is almost always more beneficial than having a link on a PR1 website due to the “trust” factor.. but when it comes down to it, all these high PR profile websites aren’t as powerful as you may think. That’s not to say that you can’t boost your profile page rank up though. And more likely than not, it will be easier to boost up the PR of a profile page on a PR9 website than on a profile page of a PR2 website. Another extremely important thing is outbound links. The more outbound links on a given page, the less link strength you will receive. Lets say you have a link on a PR9 page with 100 outbound links. A link on a PR8 page with 3 links will provide 100x more link strength. Let’s put all this stuff together:

Strength = ^{(PR + 1)3 x 4} / _{outbound links}

The page rank of the page and the number of outbound links will help you calculate the link strength of a certain link. If you have a backlink on a PR10 page and you are the only outbound link on that page, your website will receive a link strength of 5324.. the absolute maximum. Now lets say you have a backlink on a PR10 page with 224 outbound links. That backlink will reward you with only 24. This is still a good amount, but obviously you can see the huge difference because of the number of outbound links. You can play around with this and test it out for yourself. Look at a couple website for a specific keyword in Google. Plug them into Link diagnosis, and you will see how effective Link Strength is.

Conclusion:

• Quality backlinks are more effective than the number of backlinks
• It’s about Page PR, not Website PR
• High page rank backlinks do not necessarily mean high link strength backlinks
• Outbound links are extremely important

So, my advice would be instead of spending time blasting your website with a million backlinks, take the time to look for relevant blogs or other pages that allow you to post a link. Find the pages that have at least a PR of 1 and make sure that the number of outbound links are low.

There are a ton of great pagerank checker tools to use. I just wanted to share with you the tool that I always come back to: pagerank.bthomson.com. Obviously there isn’t much difference between pangerank checkers; they all generally do the same exact thing. But lets face it.. the most annoying thing in the world is having to enter a captcha when attempting to quickly check the pagerank of single URL. I particularly like this one for a couple reasons…

• It’s really quick
• It’s really simple
• And most importantly, there’s no damn captcha to enter

It also has a couple cool extras that I haven’t seen anywhere else. First of all, you can copy and past multiple URLs into a field box, and it will return the pageranks of all the URLs instantly. You can also import a list of URLs from a text document and check in bulk that way as well. Now the coolest feature of all is the outgoing links PR checker. You can enter a URL in the text field and it will return the pagerank for EVERY outgoing link on that individual page. Just to be clear though.. it will only check the pagerank on that exact page; not the entire domain name. So “google.com” will have different outgoing links than “google.com/products”.
